The conclusions presented here are supported by analysis in volume 2, which presents additional architectural, ceramic, lithic, faunal, floral, and iconographic information.

The information that the architecture provides on the scale and form of construction, the overall site plan, and the functional interpretations derived from architectural design and the associated artifacts provide the basis for most of the project's interpretations about site growth, population size, social composition, and urban organization.

As a result, its origin and role in Mesoamerican prehistory was hotly debated for more than a hundred years. The site has been characterized as a Mayan colony (Noguera 1946), a military fortress (Armillas 1951; Togno 1903), a commercial entrepôt controlling important interregional trade routes (Noguera 1945; Litvak King 1970a), a religious shrine and pilgrimage center for the cult of Quetzalcoatl (Piña Chán 1977), and even the location of such fabled places in Nahuatl mythology as the origin caves of Chicomoztoc (Abadiano 1910) and the paradise of Tamoanchan (Plancarte y Navarette 1934; Piña Chán 1989; Lorenzo 1986:100, 1989:22).
