Writers who wanted airtime purposely wrote sketches that required more people to be in them. However, there were certain prerequisites to be met in order for a writer to get airtime. The show had evolved an unwritten code that stated a writer had to first earn the respect of the veteran cast and crew before he could be seen on the air or have dialogue in a sketch. This was accomplished by carefully studying the techniques of the other writers. It was also important to observe the cast members to see what they were particularly adept at performing.
Herlihy and Sandler knew that giving Happy Gilmore a vicious temper was a risky move since it might alienate him from the audience. Sandler explained his reasons: “Tim and I were looking for that edge to the character but we did a lot of thinking before we actually decided to give him a bad temper. We were aware that we were in danger of creating a character that people won’t like. That’s not exactly the kind of character you want in a comedy. But he’s also a generous guy who’s helping his grandmother, so I think people will think of him as a good guy.
Nothing was better than having a read-through. You stayed up all Tuesday night—all of us did that—and then we’d do the readthrough and you wouldn’t know what was getting on the show but you’d have an hour or so while those guys [Lorne Michaels and the other producers] were figuring it out. So we’d all go to China Regency up on Fifty-fifth and we’d eat and watch Farley eat more than us. Farley was so happy; I think we went there the most because they had a lazy susan. It’s easier that way. That’s all we did, we just talked about comedy—what we heard at the read-through, what was funny, what we didn’t like, what we thought was going to get on, that kind of stuff.
